The final part of the funeral occurred that night, despite the uncertainty of Disung's punishment for disrespecting the rulers and Joaolong's injuries. Somehow, they both were allowed to attend the ceremony, Joaolong supported by Wu Tai and a medical physician constantly near to check his wounds. The assassin had stabbed him three times in the caves but somehow, Joaolong dodged him just enough that the wounds weren't too deep nor damaged vital organs. It was a miracle. Meanwhile, the assassin was locked in the prison, begging for mercy. Both Disung and Joaolong had a terrible feeling he wouldn't survive to attend his trial.

Every person in the entire kingdom went to a water source, whether it be a stream or lake, to place a flower or lantern to float into the spirit realm. During this, no words were uttered and many silent prayers provided honour and blessings to the new spirits.

Residence of the Lotus Palace gathered along water entrances and streams that flowed inside the bordered wall. Joaolong and Disung stood on the bank of Lady Gaze neary Joaolong's residence, delicatedly holding their paper flowers. Joaolong's paper was designed with swirls of whites among a red flower pattern and was folded perfectly. The opposite could be said about Disung, who lacked talent at fine crafts and covered most of his flower in wax to prevent it from unfolding.
The ceremony went on as usual, everyone placing their symbols of farewell into the water and silently giving a blessing. From the sky, birds cawed in admiration at the fake fireflies dancing on the waters in snake-like formations. The peace in mourning left when something drifted down the stream from a dark part of the palace. Sad eyes turned horrified in an instant.

A body floated in a small boat, scaring the fish and disrupting the lanterns spinning on the water. The woman looked like a goddess sleeping in a meadow of bright flowers from the summer. The strong floral scents masked wafts of rot and the dislocation of the neck and head was hidden by lace and jewellery. The outfit was a stark white dress, pearls and ruffles adding liveliness, and festive makeup and hair gave character to the lifeless, stiff body. A large, rectangle plank of wood sat on Jiang's chest, willing anyone able, to read the message. The Fox's signature was on the bottom corner.

"Blaming an innocent was the first mistake as a new emperor, Hong Huli."
